Signs And Symptoms Of Hypothyroidism

Introduction: Hypothyroidism is a disease that is caused in animals and Human beings. It is a disease related to the thyroid glands. Thyroid is one of the major endocrine glands. The thyroid gland in some animal or human bodies is incapable of producing thyroid hormone. The Thyroid gland helps in the metabolism of the body. The rate at which the energy is burnt or the rate of metabolism occurs is supported by the thyroid hormones. The deficiency of iodine is also one of the major reasons for Hypothyroidism.

There are a number of symptoms of Hypothyroidism. They mainly include the weight gain, puffy face, Loss or thinning of Eyebrows, cold intolerance, depression, cold hands or feet, Dry or thinning hair, thickening of the skin, thin and brittle fingernails, joint or muscle pains.

The Early symptoms of Hypothyroidism are tired feeling, sensitive to cold, muscle and joint ache, weight gain, constipation and in case of women there can be heavy periods. At this time people often think that these symptoms may be due to over stress or due to age. If the amount of thyroid hormones continues to fall the skin becomes dry and rough, the mental activity basically the concentration and memory is slightly disturbed. There can be some amount of depression observed in the patients.

If the Hypothyroidism is not treated at time then the later symptoms include the swelling of face, a sleepy appearance, dry and rough skin, and loss of the hair. There are some more symptoms that include husky voice and numbness of the arms and legs, muscle pain, weakness. Some people suffer from hair loss, depression, mental confusion, uneasiness, day time sleepiness.

There is one more type called as secondary Hypothyroidism. This is mainly caused due to the abnormality of the pituitary gland. In case of small children the Hypothyroidism is detected if there are feeding problems, constipation, hoarseness, and sleepiness. Also in some cases the babies suffer from protruding abdomen, dry skin and delayed teething. If the babies are not treated in time, than they suffer from problems like puffy face, bloated appearance and below normal intelligence.
