Hypothyroidism And Cardiovascular Disease

Hypothyroidism is caused by the low production of TSH in the body. These hormones are very much required for the metabolism and the deficiency may lead to weight gain. Even if medications are used, weight loss is typically slower than normal. Since the percentage of hypothyroidism is more in females than in males, the weight gain is a major concern. Apart from medications one needs to follow a correct diet religiously.

The thyroid gland plays a crucial role in maintaining the body's defenses. Hormones produced by the thyroid glands help to regulate the metabolic rate within each cell. People with hypothyroidism are susceptible to viral and bacterial infections.

How Hypothyroidism affects the Heart

One of the side effects of hypothyroidism is decreased heart rate and cardiac output. Though the heart rate is slowed the heart functions normally. However, with more significant and prolonged deficiency of thyroid hormone, cardiac function may become abnormal. For a person with no history of heart disease the mild changes in heart function associated with hypothyroidism are usually imperceptible.

Studies reveal that people with hypothyroidism are prone to heart diseases. It has been found that older women with hypothyroidism are likely to have blockages in the aorta. They are also prone to heart attacks. This condition of thyroid has got a strong risk for both hardening of the arteries and heart attacks in older women.

If the patient has pre-existing heart disease, hypothyroidism may lead to decreased cardiac function causing deterioration in the underlying heart condition. This may lead to shortness of breath or sometimes congestive heart failure. If hypothyroidism is treated, it ultimately increases energy and improve cardiac function.

What Hypothyroidism Studies Reveal

The survey conducted shows that 4.6% of the US population has reported hypothyroidism. Studies also reveal that hypothyroidism is more common in females than males. The frequency of hypothyroidism increases with age. In developed countries the deaths caused by hypothyroidism is very much uncommon. However in under developed countries, there have been cases of deaths and mental problems caused due to hypothyroidism.

Hypothyroidism can be treated by consuming hormone pills that are available in form of herbal capsules. Doctors also prescribe tablets like cytomel, levothyroxine and thyrolar. Another alternative treatment is the implantation of an armour thyroid. However, this treatment is not popular.

Ummm….Armour thyroid is not "implanted". It's a pill that you take just as you take other pills. Armour is the brand name of desiccated thyroid and it's made by Forest Labs. And yes, it is becoming very popular because it's changing patients lives all over the world. You need to read www.stopthethyroidmadness.com
