Hypothyroidism And Blood Sugar

Hypothyroidism is the condition where the thyroid is under active. That means there is less secretion of the TSH and this will affect metabolism. The symptoms of hypothyroidism are that the person feels fatigue and is sluggish. Rapid weight gain and the inability to lose weight once it has been gained are also present. Severe hair loss and the skin become pale. Irregular bowel movements, Low or no sex drives at all, Abnormal or missing menstrual cycles over a period of months etc. Hypothyroidism is more common in women than in men.

There are some foods which are either wise healthy, need to be avoided. Avoid potatoes and corn as they contain starch. The diet should not include cabbage, cauliflower, broccoli, Brussels sprouts, mustard greens spinach, peaches, pears, strawberries, radishes and millet. These fruits and vegetables are likely to increase the chances of developing goiter.

How hypothyroidism affects The Insulin Level

For a person with hypothyroidism, the body would find it very hard to process the carbohydrates in the blood stream. Therefore excess insulin is produced in the body to process the carbohydrates. This process of excess insulin in the blood stream for a person with hypothyroidism would lead to weight gain.

The Endocrine system is involved in both diabetes and thyroid disease. Endocrine glands along with group of glands help to regulate the body's metabolism. Hypothyroidism is more common in females and the study reveals that 30% of women with thyroid problems are prone to type1 diabetes.

Hypothyroidism has a significant effect on blood glucose levels and can affect diabetes control. Hypothyroidism can decrease insulin requirements. Symptoms of type 2 diabetes are very much common in people with hypothyroidism.

If a person with hypothyroidism has diabetes, they should be tested for the thyroid disorders once in three years. The Thyroid stimulating hormone test which measures the amount of TSH produced naturally by the body is the best test of thyroid function.

Tips to Increase Metabolism

Proper diet, regular vigorous exercises and nutritional supplements helps to regulate metabolism so that it will be easier to lose weight. It is advisable to the people suffering from hypothyroidism eat five to six small meals at regular intervals throughout the day.
