Hormone Therapy For Prostate Cancer

About Prostate Cancer

The risks of cancer are growing at a fast pace and people suffer over and over again even after all sorts of treatments. The hormone therapy has proven to be an efficient and a foolproof way to deal with the problem of cancer. The hormone therapy concentrates on the long-term benefits rather than the short-term goals. Prostate growth is stimulated by the male hormones that are called the androgens. Anyhow, the male sex hormone- testosterone that is released from the testicles also plays a major role in prostate development. Hormone therapy can alter the processes and reduce the male hormone levels.

Features of the hormone therapy for prostate cancer

The basic aim of the hormone therapy is to reduce the male hormone content in the body in order to restrict the prostrate growth. One of the two ways possible is to surgically remove the testicles. This is a permanent method as testosterone cannot be produced at all. The second one is to treat the patient with medication that involves synthetic hormonal preparations. Even the injections can be of great use during the treatment. The surgical way is permanent and a quick one. This sums up to be a cost-effective proposition than the medication technique.

There are a number of risks and side-effects of the hormone therapy. The major problems are caused due to the difference in the levels of the hormones in the male body. The normal balance of the body is disturbed and hence some consequences may prevail. The basic problem is disturbance in the sexual activities in a man's life. Maximum operations lead to impotency. The accessory sex organs become passive and one can witness a number of bald patches due to hair-loss. Hot flushes in the initial stages are a common difficulty. This in the long-term may even result in strength loss and decline in muscle mass.

Conclusion

The production of testosterone is regulated by the other hormones that are released from the other endocrine glands. The hormone therapy is the last resort for the men for whom the other therapies have failed in totality. The hormone therapy should be used only if the PSA level is fluctuating and if the active cancer is developing to form tumor. Even the metastatic prostate cancer or the external prostate growth can also be healed by the hormone therapy. Hence the hormone therapy is a proficient method to counter prostate cancer.
