Hypothyroidism is caused by a lack of thyroid hormone secretion from the pituitary gland or thyrotropin-releasing hormone(TRH) from the hypothalamus. Thyroid hormones are very important in controlling the body's energy. Once hypothyroidism is diagnosed the doctors would prescribe the synthetic thyroid pr desiccated thyroid hormone. In acute cases, thyroid hormone replacement is necessary. Studies also reveal that hypothyroidism is more common in females than males. The frequency of hypothyroidism increases with age. In under developed countries the deaths caused by hypothyroidism is very much common.

How The Skin Is Affected?

One of the common symptoms of Hypothyroidism is drying of the skin. The recent study has revealed the prevalence of hypothyroidism among patients with cutaneous melanoma. The study also revealed that hypothyroidism is more prevalent among the male population with cutaneous melanoma than among the female population .

The Role Of Diet

Diet plays an important role in the reduction of hypothyroidism and all the symptoms that is associated with it. There are some nutrients that should be included in the diet and there are also certain food stuffs that have to be avoided.

1. For a person with hypothyroidism a healthy and nutritious diet includes whole grains, natural foods which contain fibres, plenty of fruits and vegetables, seafood and other lean protein food.

2. Take Plenty of Water - a person with hypothyroidism should drink plenty of water. It is always advisable to eat fruits and vegetables that have more water content. The consumption of water is good for the skin too.

3. Fruit diet - certain fruits like strawberries are a no- no for the people suffering from hypothyroidism. However, if the person with hypothyroidism has fruit diet, it will not only help in the reduction of weight but also decreases the skin dryness. It is also believed that this diet will add a glow to the skin.

Hypothyroidism Treatments

The studies reveal that acupuncture and traditional Chinese medicines are helpful in the cure of hypothyroidism. The Chinese use herbs to cure hypothyroidism. This form of treatment takes a long time to get cured. Naturopathy and Ayurveda are very ancient treatment. These forms of treatment work on the control diet and body work outs. There are also other forms of treatment like nutrition therapy, aroma therapy and so on.
