Cerebellar Ataxia

Cerebellar Ataxia is a disorder of coordination due to a lesion that affects the cerebellum. It can be caused by many reasons. This includes vascular, infectious, hereditary or metabolic reasons. However most of the causes are associated with other lesions. The most common reason that it occurs in adults is due to alcoholism.

The cause of cerebellar ataxia in association with hypothyroidism remains unknown. It is considered to be a rare cause. However, a case study shows that a woman of age 62 who was diagnosed with cerebellar ataxia was treated with thyroxine and triiodothyronine. It was noted that it showed signs of regression almost completely within six weeks. Therefore it is assumed that a thyrogenic which is a metabolic factor is responsible for the non-specific cerebellar changes.
